Our People

We understand our clients are unique, because we are too. The team at Hodgsons spans all manner of professional and personal spheres, with experts in inheritance tax, statutory audits and capital gains, through to a chairman of an enterprise agency, as well as trustees and treasurers of charities and local organisations.

Whilst we may agree that we’re all different, we do also believe that everyone benefits from employee investment.

At Hodgsons we recognise that training and practical experience is imperative to the success and health of business, both ours and yours. All our employees are kept up-to-date with the latest industry developments and qualifications, and in acknowledgement to this commitment to training, in 2006 the firm was awarded Platinum Approved Trainer status by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.

Together we offer an enviable skill set that delivers via a wide range of qualified, professional, personable individuals. Hodgsons are registered auditors and are able to undertake statutory audits as well as non statutory audits such as for the Law Society and grant audits.

Our People

James Hodgson
James HodgsonManaging Partner, Falmouth
I really enjoy assisting a broad range of clients with their businesses and linking this to their personal tax planning. From advising on business start-ups and increasing profitability to succession planning, business valuation and raising finance, I take a pride in understanding each clients’ specific objectives in order to give them the best possible practical advice.

With more than 20 years’ hands-on experience of advising owner-managed businesses and charities, I see my role as supporting clients by looking at the detailed numbers and tax implications as well as acting as a general sounding board – and devil’s advocate, where necessary – to help them make robust financial decisions.

Having previously undertaken voluntary roles as Director of Newlyn Art Gallery and the Falmouth Business Improvement District, I am currently a charity trustee of Cornwall’s Regimental Museum. These external experiences are rewarding because they provide a platform for me to contribute practical commercial advice.

Outside of work, I can be found walking the coastline or in the garden with my family.

My aim is to really understand our clients by building long-term professional relationships so that I can meet their individual and ever-changing needs. I achieve this by listening, by being receptive to their points of view and enjoy nothing better than the challenge of a problem to resolve.

Offering general practice accountancy to a cross-section of clients – both small and large – I tend to specialise in the construction, property, legal and agricultural sectors.

In my spare time, I volunteer my expertise as a Director of Cornwall Football Association and Treasurer of Launceston Football Club Association. I also take a keen interest in how local businesses impact upon the town, having lived and worked in the area for 50 years.

I want my clients to feel that I am here to help, whatever the situation. I want them to think of me as a friend – someone they can rely on to understand the nuts and bolts – the ups and downs – of their business, and deliver the service they deserve, saving them money in the process.

With a farming background and comprehensive knowledge of the sector, I am ideally placed to head up Hodgson’s Agricultural team.

Whether lending an occasional helping hand at my family’s farm in North Devon or supporting my son at Young Farmers’ and rugby events, my nearest and dearest are my number one priority outside the office.

I love nothing better than fixing things and finding solutions; making things happen and overcoming challenges; helping clients to achieve their business goals and colleagues to fulfil their potential.

With more than 30 years’ experience, I have developed a solid knowledge base that enables me to pinpoint clients’ needs and have extensive expertise in accounting software packages.

I am also responsible for Hodgsons’ IT systems as well as our staff development and training programme.

Outside of work, I love being outdoors with my family and my passion is to show and judge Flatcoated Retrievers. I also like to indulge my creative side with painting and drawing, and have been very heavily involved in supporting community groups.

As a keen member of St Enodoc Golf Club and an avid sports fan, I understand the value of playing to my strengths as an individual as well as what it takes to work effectively as part of a team. Sport is all about building trust and responding swiftly to opportunities, and these are qualities that I also value in the workplace.

With extensive knowledge of a variety of industries – from tourism and construction to consultancy and retail – I am part of Hodgsons’ Audit team and work with some of the larger corporates that we represent.

I particularly enjoy building lasting relationships with my clients and finding mutually beneficial solutions to new challenges.

Katherine Burd

With a meticulous eye for detail, a methodical approach, an industry background and
experience in accounts preparation, audit, payroll, tax and management accounting, I relish resolving issues from a slightly different perspective.

I enjoy a challenge and learning new skills both within my career and my personal life. I am a keen horse rider and compete regularly in show jumping. I also enjoy playing the piano, running and surfing.

Ross Atkinson-Beaumont

I have an eclectic outlook on life and like to explore new interests as well as new ways of doing things. Sometimes tax planning opportunities are not immediately obvious from the information that a client initially provides but by engaging in open dialogue, communicating complicated issues clearly and thinking differently, we are able to work together to achieve the most effective solutions.

My particular area of specialism is advising owner-managed businesses on personal taxation, including capital gains tax.

I am at my happiest when identifying solutions to thorny technical problems.

Loyalty is very important to me – to friends, family and even to Aston Villa! I work hard to ensure that my clients know they can count on me and call for help whenever it’s needed.

With 20 years’ professional practice; an extensive client portfolio of agricultural, retail and investment businesses, and wide-ranging expertise in accounting, I work closely with Cornwall’s farming community to help them navigate the constant challenges that the industry faces.

Claire Weeks

As Treasurer for a local church and a Trustee of the Young Farmers’ club in my area, I find playing an active role in the community I live and work in richly rewarding.

Spending any available free time helping out on my partner’s farm in North Devon, I am ideally placed to understand the challenges faced by Hodgsons’ farming clients and provide them with relevant advice in my role as a member of the company’s Agricultural team.

Whether keeping active through Zumba, yoga or brisk walks within Cornwall’s stunning countryside, or keeping everyone organised at home, balancing the different aspects of my life requires energy and attention to detail. These qualities extend into my professional life and help to strengthen my clients’ confidence in me to deliver exactly what they need when they need it.

From helping clients to get to grips with Sage and Quickbooks software or keeping them calm and clear-headed, I really enjoy getting on with the task in hand and working with them to produce the desired results.

Rae Baker
Rae BakerPayroll Manager, Launceston
I am a flexible problem-solver who draws on my experiences of the manufacturing, retail, automative and hospitality industries to support clients whether their needs are relatively straightforward or more complex. I am proud to provide a professional and friendly service that works for them.

I am also Hodgsons’ resident expert on the auto-enrolment of staff onto the Government’s workplace pension scheme.

Spending time with friends is something I love to do outside of work, whether playing badminton or enjoying beautifully cooked local produce at some of Cornwall’s finest eateries.

Peter Hodgson
Peter HodgsonConsultant, Launceston
Having retired from the partnership, I remain a consultant and share my 40 years’ experience of landed estates, trust governance, inheritance tax planning and client knowledge with the team, whenever it is required.

In retirement, I remain as busy as ever in voluntary roles and contribute financial expertise to a number of organisations – from Padstow’s National Lobster Hatchery and Truro Cathedral to The Charterhouse in London.
